Sharks land Guerin in deadline deal

02/27/2007 - San Jose, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The San Jose Sharks made a deal to bolster their offense, as they acquired veteran winger Bill Guerin from the St. Louis Blues just hours before Tuesday's trade deadline.

In return for Guerin, the Blues will receive left wing Ville Nieminen, prospect Jay Barriball and a first-round pick in the 2007 draft.

The 36-year-old Guerin was leading the Blues in goals (28) and points (47) this season and has 710 points (356 goals, 354 assists) over his 15 seasons in the NHL.

"I'm thrilled, I am really excited about it," Guerin said about the trade. "This is one of those teams that was on my radar. I am very happy to be going there."

Guerin, a native of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, began his career with the New Jersey Devils and was a member of that franchise's 1995 Stanley Cup championship team.

San Jose will be Guerin's sixth NHL club after stints in St. Louis, New Jersey, Dallas, Boston and Edmonton. Guerin was also a member of the United States national team in each of the last three Winter Olympics.

Guerin signed a one-year deal with St. Louis last summer and will become an unrestricted free agent in July.

This is the second major salary dump for the Blues in the last two days after the club sent forward Keith Tkachuk to Atlanta on Sunday for forward Glen Metropolit and what could amount to four draft picks.

Nieminen has just one goal and one assist in 30 games this season. The native of Finland has scored 48 goals and assisted on 69 others for 117 points in 371 NHL games with Colorado, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Calgary, the New York Rangers and San Jose.

Barriball is a center currently playing for the University of Minnesota. He was selected in the seventh round of the last year's draft and has notched 16 goals in 35 games with the Golden Gophers.
